Dental Health Habits and Success

Dentists urge us to brush our teeth twice daily. Why? Brushing removes food particles that cause tooth decay and it prevents tartar build-up.

If we follow this advice we can prevent cavities, infections, and gum disease. However, if we choose to brush less often, say once or twice per week, we lose the advantages and expose ourselves to all of these maladies.

The second weapon in the dental health arsenal is the semi-annual check-up. At these visits a hygienist thoroughly cleans and polishes our teeth using high-powered tools. Then, the dentist carefully examines our teeth and gums looking for trouble spots that require treatment. X-rays may be taken to discover internal trouble not evident.

As we consistently follow this dental health plan, we create an atmosphere of health, we identify problems before they become major issues, and we guard against needless pain and expense.

Likewise, we can develop a daily plan that we can follow to create a consistent atmosphere for greater success, to identify problems while they are still minor, and to avert needless failure and pain.

For improved success I prescribe the following: seek daily inspiration; and perform quarterly personal check-ups.

Daily Inspiration
Use a variety of tools to secure your daily inspiration. Find inspirational books and e-zines to study, CDs or tapes to play during your commute, or videos or DVDs to watch in the evenings. By consistently exposing yourself to such material, you will focus your actions on the important areas of life, and keep yourself motivated and confident. You will also glean ideas you can apply to propel yourself to greater heights.

Just as good dental care requires daily attention, you must study inspirational material daily and consistently to obtain the benefits.

Quarterly Check-ups
At the end of each quarter, survey your progress. Take an hour or two and evaluate your goal achievement and identify potential problems. Compare your performance to your goals. Are you headed in the right direction? Are you progressing as fast as you planned? If not, develop a treatment plan filled with actions you can take to improve your success.

Just as pilots and mariners make frequent course corrections, we can adjust our plans to move us closer to our chosen destinations. And once we perfect the process, we will achieve every goal.


Please brush your teeth, go to the dentist, study inspirational materials, and give yourself quarterly personal check-ups. I’m confident that with regular dental and mental care we will prevent disease and failure.
