Last week, at the airport in St. Louis after serving me a breakfast bagel, the young cashier sullenly said, “Take it easy.”
For a few minutes afterward I reflected on that phrase, “Take it easy.” I’ve heard it all of my life. The phrase implies getting along by doing as little as possible. It encourages coasting.
Do you think Michael Jordan lived by this credo? Will taking it easy get you what you want?
On that same trip, I met an incredible St. Louis cab driver. JW definitely wants more than he could achieve by taking it easy. Just two or three minutes after heading into the heavy city traffic toward my hotel, JW handed me his business card—or more correctly, businesses card.
He owns companies that rent U-Haul trucks, perform automotive service, does quick oil changes, serves fresh food, and performs beauty, barber, and manicure services. JW continues to drive his cab to make ends meet while his young companies grow. Plus, he talks to every passenger about his businesses—marketing his services.
Like most young men from the slums, he continuously heard discouraging messages from those with whom he shared his dreams. In spite of these nay-sayers, JW reaches for the stars.
Impressed with this young cabby’s drive to succeed (pun intended), I gave him a copy of my book, Ordinary People Can Achieve the Extraordinary. He indicated that he’s always wanted to write a book about his rise from the slums of St. Louis to budding entrepreneur.
I feel certain that JW will push his businesses into inspirational successes and will complete that book.
Whose attitude will lead to the fulfillment of dreams—the sullen bagel cashier, or the enterprising cabbie/risk-taker?
When we “take it easy” we let life hand us what it will. When we push ourselves toward our dreams, we determine our lifestyle.
JW provides inspiration to all of us in taking control of our own lives. So does subscriber Doug, who is starting a candle-making business. Also, Ashley serves as a model of initiative as she prepares to begin nursing school.
Whatever your dream, chase it.
"Goals give you more than a reason to get up in the morning; they are an incentive to keep you going all day. Goals tend to tap the deeper resources and draw the best out of life." Harvey Mackay
“The basic goal-reaching principle is to understand that you go as far as you can see, and when you get there you will always be able to see farther.” Zig Ziglar
"You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it there are only alibis." Henry Ford
"Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude." Thomas Jefferson
"Attitude is an important part of the foundation upon which we build a productive life. A good attitude produces good results, a fair attitude poor results, a poor attitude poor results. We each shape our own life, and the shape of it is determined largely by our attitude. M. Russell Ballard
