David's Corner

Congratulations to those of you who graduate this month. Iím especially proud of my son-in-law who graduated from the law school at the University of Utah. Tyler, great work!

Many of you have taken great interest in my friend Nick Marriam who contracted cancer at age seven, beat it, and set up a program to help kids who find themselves in the same difficulties.
Nick has now set up a non-profit foundation to further his work.
I strongly encourage you to go to his new website at http://www.nickelbyproject.org
and help Nick provide gift bags to children spending months in the hospital during their treatments.

I appreciate your feedback. You encourage me and give me excellent suggestions. Thank you for helping me create better service and products for all of my subscribers and customers.

Need a speaker for your staff, your service organization, or any other group? Invite me and Iíll lift the spirits of your group. Iíll help them see that they can make a remarkable leap in their lives, achieve their dreams, and live with greater significance.
Email me and we can discuss your groupís needs.

Today's Article: Find a Way

by David DeFord

Not long ago I made the mistake of leaving a tomato stake in my garden over the winter. The stake still had strings tied to it. A robin decided that the string would make a wonderful addition to her nest. She had a goalóget the string loose and carry it to her nest.

With her beak, this mother bird pulled and tugged, trying to free that string. I watched her for ten minutes working on it. I came back a few hours later and this persistent bird was still working on that string. Days laterósame thing.

The robin continued pursuing her goal day after day after day. She kept trying the same failing method over and overóthey donít call them ďbird brainsĒ for nothing.

Finally, I went out and cut the string and let it lay in the garden until the robin returned to try again. She probably thought she had succeeded in her goal because of her persistence. In a way, she did.

Like this persistent mother bird, we have goals.

Like the bird, we make plans on how to achieve them.

And, like the bird, most of our initial plans do not carry us to our goals.

Even in failure, the mother bird continued her one approach. We sometimes do the same. We make a plan, and when our initial plan doesnít work, we continue our one approach, until we give up on the goal altogether.

Those who successfully achieve their goals, in the face of failed initial attempts, assess their plans, make changes to them, and try again. They find a way.

The major key to goal achievement is not in setting easy goals; nor is it in making sure your initial plan is foolproof.

The key to goal achievement is in planning, getting started, assessing and amending your plan until you succeed.

Who knows how many gold miners in the last century quit digging just two feet from the mother lode?

Plan, implement, assess, amend the plan, and implement again.

You can achieve nearly any goal if you continue this cycle until you find a way.

You are no bird brain. You wonít need someone to ďcut the stringĒ for you to achieve your dreams.

You can find a way.

I Wish to Be Useful: A Guide for More Meaningful Living

by David DeFord

Are you ready to add more kick to your life?

I Wish to Be Useful: A Guide for More Meaningful Living will give you the lift you need.

"I think most of us hope that by the end of our lives we can look back and feel that the world is a better place because of our presence and the contributions we have made. Along the way, too, we want to feel that we are making a difference to the lives of people around us. How to go about "making a difference" is the crucial question and this book provides many of the answers." Peter Shepherd, author of "Transforming the Mind" and owner of Tools for Transformation

We all wish to be useful. We feel much happier when we make useful contributions to our employers, to our customers, to our team members, to our families, and to our communities.

When we fix our sights on our daily tasks and lose sight of our overriding missions, we suffer and so does the quality and passion of our work.

A firefighter can see beyond the mundane tasks of maintaining equipment and find greater usefulness in remembering that with that well-maintained equipment he will save precious lives and valuable property.

Raise your sights higher than your everyday living. Find your higher purpose. Find your best way to feel useful.

"This book is a stiff antidote to the values marketing is inculcating our children with today: 'I wish to have more useless stuff at all costs.' We need more people to dare people to be their best, and to dare to think they can change the world. That's what David DeFord does in this wonderful book. If the title puts you off, realize this: one day, if you're lucky, you'll realize that the best and only way to serve yourself is to serve others. Why not embrace that wisdom now, even if you still think that a shiny gold watch is going to bring you happiness." Mark Joyner, Founder of Simpleology, http://www.simpleology.com
